Please join us for this year’s BRIDGES Walk for a Just Community on Saturday, October 23rd!

The BRIDGES Walk for a Just Community is an inspiring event promoting inclusion, equity and justice for all.  This celebration is truly a display of the rich ethnic and cultural compilation of our region.  All proceeds for the walk benefit the programs of BRIDGES for a Just Community.

A Little About Akwaaba: Black Student Welcome 2010

Akwaaba 2010 - the Black Student Welcome - was organized by Ethnic Programs and Services and the African American Cultural and Resource Center.  It was HUGE!!!

I did a terrible job documenting in photo the event, so keep your eyes tuned to the AACRC website for photos.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Ohio Governor Ted Strickland kicked off the event with a rousing call to academic excellence and staying politically engaged.
  • Vice-President of Student Affairs & Services and Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Mitchell Livingston gave a state of affairs of diversity at UC - particularly highlighting the many great things happening here at UC.
  • UC President Dr. Gregory Williams gave an official University welcome.
  • Several state officials and candidates spoke, including Congressperson Steve Driehaus.
  • All new students participated in break-out sessions that connected them with campus faculty and staff.
  • The Black Arts Collaborative gave an original performance that integrated several of the arts - singing, spoken word, and dance.
  • Several NPHC sororities and fraternities participated in a stroll session.
Here are a few of the RAPPers caught on camera:
There are so many RAPPers you can't see the RAPP table!  Back left to right: Kinsey (XXIII), Mieshia (XXIV), Zina (XXV), Marjorie (XXV), and Lane (XXV).  Front left to right: Dy'Mand (XXV) and Kristin (XXV).

Chika (XXIV) and Asha (XXIV) helped welcome the first year students to UC!

Mieshia (XXIV) and Stephanie (XXIV) caught on camera during a performance.

Many thanks to all who came out and represented RAPP!  It was exciting to see "the official premier" of Jojo's great RAPP commercial.  It was also great to see the recruitment wunderkinds Mieshia and Zina work their magic on new students!  We got 26 applicants - most through those two!

Asian Student Welcome

The staff of Ethnic Programs & Services organized a wildly successful Asian Student Welcome 2010!  So many students came that we couldn't fit into the large multi-room space that is 400TUC!

We were able to set up a promotional table for RAPP.  We also were given the opportunity to speak to the attendees - Rachel (XXV) did an outstanding job talking about RAPP!

Many of us sat together, but we made friends with leaders of the Japanese American Student Society!

Dean of Students and Associate Vice President of Student Life Frank Bowen gave an official welcome from the University.

Our University's new Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Dr. Santa Ono welcomed students new and returning to see him as a resource at UC.

Many thanks to all the RAPPers who came out for fun and to promote RAPP:  Brice (XXV), Rachel (XXV), Jojo (XXIV), and Jotale (XXV).

The Welcome ended with a performance from the UC Breakdance Club:

Un Poco of Hispanic Student Welcome

Last Thursday was the annual Hispanic Student Welcome organized by Ethnic Programs & Services.  By all accounts, it was a smashing success! Many students came out to celebrate UC, welcome new students, and share/learn about campus resources for Latino/a students.
Rather than a full table for each organization, we all collaborated to share the few tables available in Mick & Mack's Cafe.  There were resources from a dozen great organizations!

Student Body President Drew Smith, Student Body Vice-President Mark Rooney, and Special Interests Cabinet Director Ron Hart-Brown talked about how to get involved in Undergraduate Student Government and the First Year Experience internship program.

A representative of Alpha Psi Lambda co-ed Latino/a fraternity talked about the organization and how to get involved.

Dr. Mitchell Livingston, Vice-President of Student Affairs and Services and Chief Diversity Officer, gave an official welcome from the University and our president.

Leaders from Latinos en Accion spoke about the history of the organization and the many activities they have coming up this year.

Jojo (XXIV) spoke about what RAPP meant for him and why he encourages students to join.  You can't see it in this picture, but joining us at the mic were Lisa (XXIV), Krystal (XXIV), LaToya (XXIV), Jotale (XXV), and Kinsey (XXIII).

There were other speakers, but these are the only I caught on film.  Also not shown is the delicious meal we all shared and the fun times we had mingling with other attendees.

Many thanks to all who came out and represented organizations!  Even bigger thanks to the wonderful staff of Ethnic Programs and Services for organizing the event!

Meet the RAPP XXVI Peer Leaders!

We had many great RAPPers apply to be Peer Leaders with RAPP XXVI and it was a tough decision to select our five for the year.  The facilitation team and I are greatly looking forward to the year ahead with the amazing RAPPers!

Amber - Tuesday Peer Leader
Here's a quick intro to our RAPP XXVI Peer Leaders:

Amber - Tuesday
Amber was an active participant in RAPP XXV Wednesday group.  She's a post-graduate student preparing for medical school.
Brice - Tuesday Peer Leader
Brice - Tuesday

Brice was a great participant in RAPP XXV Wednesday group.  He's studying Information Technology in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.  He's currently a recruitment leader and has told RAPP XXVI "I like to be involved and you should too!"

Jojo - Wednesday
Jojo - Wednesday Peer Leader

Jojo is a well-known graduate of RAPP XXIV Wednesday group and volunteered behind the scenes with RAPP XXV (to all who ate food at Spring Retreat - thank Jojo!).   He also helped pick the new RAPP logo through his work on the RAPP Rebranding Committee.
Jojo is a leader in UC's Japanese American Student Society and active in UC Alliance.

Marjorie - Wednesday
Marjorie - Wednesday Peer Leader

Marjorie was the Terence L Jones Diversity Award winner in RAPP XXV Tuesday.  Here's her Peer Leader bio:
I am 28, from rural Ohio, and an artist by trade. I’ve been a potter since I was 19, and for the past 5 years I have been teaching ceramics while attending college. I transferred to UC in 2009 from Hocking College where I studied the business of art and music. I am currently a junior in the DAAP fine arts program at UC, and hope to continue my education in a masters or doctoral program at UC. I am an eclectic person, and I love the diversity of the city. Attending UC and participating in the RAPP program has been an awakening experience for me. I now feel more confident in myself, and more understanding of the different perspectives we all have.
Rachel - Tuesday Peer Leader

Rachel - Tuesday

Rachel was a great member of RAPP XXV Wednesday.  Here's her Peer Leader Bio:
I'm a third-year Political Science and Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies double major, Pre-law. I am very involved on campus, especially with McMicken Student Ambassadors and Model UN. I'm really interested in all things RAPP and I can't wait to be a Peer Leader with RAPP XXVI.

We've got a great year ahead with some outstanding Peer Leaders for our excellent new group of RAPPers!

Walk/Run with RAPP in the Homecoming 5K!

In support of another area of of our home office SALD, RAPP will have a team in the annual Homecoming 5K to Grant Wishes Today!

The Homecoming 5K takes place on UC's Main Campus the day before the big homecoming game and raises funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  This year's walk is Friday, October 30th, 3:30PM-5:30PM.

To join the RAPP team, simply put "RAPP" in the "What is your walk team name?" portion of the registration form.  You can register on-line or in person by coming to the SALD office.

Adam of RAPP XXV participated in the 2009 5K with a friend!

RAPP T-Shirt Day & Info Tables

RAPP T-Shirt Day was the first day of classes and coincided with an informational table on MainStreet.

As always, Jojo came out with his RAPP shirt on for the RAPP shirt day!

Jotale (XXV) and Kinsey (XXIII) catch up with Asha (XXIV) and her pup companion at the RAPP info table.

The idea to have two info tables during the first week of classes and the work of filling the table with volunteers came from our recruitment team - Jojo & Brice. Jojo likened it to "a poster with people" - an interactive way to learn about the program.

In terms of connecting with people, it was a smashing success!  Some approached because they'd heard of RAPP before and were excited to meet people involved face-to-face.  Some had never heard of RAPP before and were able to learn about us from folks involved.

On Wednesday, we got 12 short applications filled out and gave out a dozen more for people to take and think about.  Many thanks to Jourdi (XXV), Jotale (XXV), Adam (XXV), and Kinsey (XXIII) for helping at the table!

On Thursday, we got 17 short applications filled out and gave out a dozen more to folks who may contact us later.  Contacts were also made for future outreach workshops.  Many thanks to Kinsey for staffing the table the whole time, mostly by herself!

Looks like we might have a new recruiting tradition - stand-alone tables!

RAPP Table Tents in TUC

This fall Jojo encouraged us to try a new-to-RAPP promotional strategy:  Put out table tents in TUC!

Not only did he encourage it, he made it happen!  Jojo helped with the design, got folks to help fold-and-tape, and more to help put out the tents in TUC.  We put out 100 tents last Wednesday, most of which are still up this week as classes start.

Here's one of the tents in action on the east side of the TUC Food Court.

To give you an idea of how extensive the posting is, here's an animated GIF that points out the tents in the area.  Remember, this is taken a full week after the first 100 went out!

myspace graphic

We've gotten positive feedback on the tents from many around campus.  We also just received our first full applicant (who's got a RAPP interview scheduled later this week) who referenced these table tents as the first place they heard of RAPP!

Many thanks to Jojo for coordinating this effort and to Brice (XXV), Kinsey (XXIII), Chris (soon to be XXVI), and Deanna for helping fold, tape, and place these tents!

Emerging Ethnic Leaders Workshop

On Monday early evening, we did a workshop with the mentors of the new-again Emerging Ethnic Leaders program!
Emerging Ethnic Leaders is a program that helps first-year students of color develop their leadership skills to achieve their full potential as leaders at UC.  It provides a supportive learning community in which fosters students' interpersonal, social, ethical, and moral development while instilling values of social awareness and social responsibility.

The program helps students develop their leadership skills, builds a leadership community, and provides networking opportunities.  Participants participate in monthly meetings and an overnight retreat and organize service projects while also developing a relationship with an upperclass student mentor.

At Monday's workshop we explored our communication styles, explored the multicultural change process, and identified areas of social identity that impact our daily experiences.  The mentors were amazing in their deep, personal conversation and their support of each other throughout the journey ahead was already apparent.

Learning Assistance Center Training

The UC Learning Assistance Center provides self-help resources for all UC students, faculty and staff.

Here's how they describe what they do on their website:

Students may download materials on anxiety, attitude, concentration, information processing, note taking, memorization, motivation, goal setting, self testing, selecting main ideas, study skills, time management, test taking strategies, researching and writing papers, and how to use the library.  In addition, both weekly and quarterly planning grids are also available for students who wish to prioritize and better manage their time.

Two of their many services involve students in helping other students:
We have the fortune of doing workshops with student workers in both Supplemental Instruction and Tutoring Services this week.  On Saturday, we'll be exploring crosscultural communication strategies with the Supplemental Instruction leaders.  On Tuesday, we'll be doing similar work with the Tutoring Services tutors.

Convocation Welcomes New Students & Investitures President Williams

This Sunday, September 19th, marks the annual New Student Convocation.  This year's Convocation will also include the investiture of UC President Dr. Gregory Williams.

The doors open at 12:30PM for the audience.  Students who'd like to participate on the Fifth Third Arena floor have to line up in the Armory Fieldhouse by 1:15PM.

Convocation brings out the whole campus community - faculty, staff, alumni, upperclass students, and community members all come out to celebrate our new students beginning their Bearcat life.

This year's event - with the President's investiture - will also key us into overall Bearcat life.  Rumor is that President Williams will be unveiling the new UC|21 plan and UC's priorities for the next several years.

Theta Phi Alpha Workshop

This afternoon I was lucky to spend the afternoon with the wonderful women of the UC's Epsilon chapter of Theta Phi Alpha.

Over twenty-five women participated in a two hour workshop where we explored diversity at UC, multicultural resources here, and crosscultural communication strategies.  They proved to be a knowledgeable and thoughtful group of leaders here - as a group, they know a lot about multiculturalism at UC and take ownership of creating a welcoming environment within their chapter.

Working with them was a great way to start the 2010-2011 school year!

RAPPlications!

The way we take applications to RAPP - or RAPPlications as someone cleverly called them yesterday - is a multi-step process:
  • People contact us for information/application.  Last year we had over 170 people contact us for this.  The response is a somewhat long email that gives the person lots of information.  It covers the basics of what RAPP is and does, the commitment we ask for, and the application process.
  • People fill out a written application.  The application is attached to the informational email and takes people about five to ten minutes to complete.  People can return them several ways - by email, fax, mail, or in person.  We just ask that it's return before or at the interview.
  • People take an interview.  The word interview is a bit formal for what this is intended - it's really a time where the applicant gets to ask all the questions they can think of and we ask a few back to explore what they're interested in and get their thoughts on RAPP things like confidentiality and commitment.
  • RAPPers get a phone call!  Actually, all applicants get emails and phone calls on Friday, October 8th.  That's when we announce who got in, which group they're in, who's on the waiting list, and how the waiting list works.
We've got 70 spots for students between the two groups!  Last year we had over 170 people contact us for applications.  About 78 of them continued on in the application process and all but a few were placed.

We're accepting applications through October 1st!  Help us spread the word!  If you know someone who's interested, you can always send them to the "Join RAPP!" page online!

RAPP @ International Student Welcome Coffee Hour

Today was UC International's International Student Welcome Coffee Hour!  This fun annual event is for all UC students, staff, and faculty and is designed to welcome new people and returning people.

This years event was held in Myers Alumni Center and took over most of the ground floor!  Many student groups and University offices tabled to provide information about the work we all do.  Of course, RAPP had a table!

Jotale of RAPP XXV, Kinsey the RAPP Public Ally, and I had a lot of fun at our table today!  As a "time passes quickly!" note - one of our early posts when this blog first started was about last year's coffee hour.

We had a new tabling experience today:  Being in the middle of the room.  The shaky, taken on a snapshot camera video below shows off our response in set-up.

The "first table of the season" was tons of fun!  Join us for future fun during the rest of tabling seaon!

It's coming up!  The annual Homecoming 5K to Grant Wishes Today is being held Friday, October 29, 2010!

Each year, several University organizations come together to create this exciting event that promotes Bearcat spirit and philanthropy.  It is primarily organized by Fraternity and Sorority Life, but is successful with the help of groups such as Friday Night Live, Student Alumni Council, Student Government, the UC Alumni Association, and BANG.

Seeking Students for the Administrative Review Committee

University Judicial Affairs is seeking student applicants - both undergraduate and graduate - for the Administrative Review Committee (ARC).

The ARC is a group of faculty, staff, and students who are selected by Judicial Affairs to participate in the review process for individuals who have allegedly violated the Student Code of Conduct.  When an allegation against a student is made, the student is invited to meet with a Procedural Hearing Administrator  to resolve the allegation.  If found responsible, the student has the option of accepting responsibility for the action and the sanction determined by the Administrator, or the student may elect to have his or her case heard by the ARC.

The role of the ARC is to listen actively and objectively to all the information presented by both the accused student and any witness or other statements.  The ARC is responsible for determining whether the accused student is responsible for violating the Student Code of Conduct, if so, administering the appropriate sanction.  The main goals of the ARC are to uphold the University's rules and protect the University community while also promoting the educational growth and development of each student.

Student members of the ARC play a very important role in shaping the University's response to student behavior, as there are twice as many students on the ARC as faculty or staff.  This creates a great opportunity for students, as peers, to understand and address and alleged violation from a similar perspective as the accused student, which ultimately makes the decisions of the ARC stronger and more influential.
    Publish Post

After training for the committee, the actual time commitment per quarter is considered minimal.

If you are interested in applying for the ARC, please contact Daniel Cummins, Director of Univ. Judicial Affairs and Assistant Dean of Students at 513.556.6814 or check out the ARC website for an application.

Here's his message to RAPPers (or RAPP applicants if you're interested):

We all love commercials, right?  Well, maybe not so much, but that's because you're not starring in them.  Here's your chance to gain UC fame while promoting RAPP:  We need folks to star in our wonderful 45 second commercial.
You may speak a portion of the script or simply have your face featured.  Either way you'll be a star.
Though this is very short notice, our first filming day will be Wednesday anytime between 1:00-3:00PM at the RAPP office (669 Steger).  If you're not able to come by on Wednesday but still wish to participate, contact us and I will provide other available days.

    Peace and Love,
    Jojo

Below is last year's commercial.  It's alright, but this upgrade is much needed!
