UC International Awards Grants for Developing New International Experiences

UC International is very pleased to announce the awarding of 11 Education Abroad Program Development Grants.  These grants will fund faculty and staff members to travel abroad in order to design new international programs for students in support of the UC2019 goal of 1500 UC students per year studying abroad.  The 11 proposals were selected from a pool of 35, and represent 8 of UC’s 14 colleges, as well as the Division of Professional Practice, and include internship and service-learning programs as well as more traditional study abroad experiences.  Destinations span the globe, and include India, China, Ghana, Singapore, and Germany, along with closer to home sites such as Canada, Jamaica, and Belize. 
Grants were awarded for the following proposals:
  • “Service Learning India: Developing Sustainable Gender Empowerment through NGO’s and Digital Media”– Ratee Apana, Associate Professor International Business, Lindner College of Business
  • "Sustainable Urbanism: An International Perspective” (China) – Christopher Auffrey, Associate Professor School of Planning, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning; Mingming Lu, Associate Professor School of Energy, Environmental, Biological and Medical Engineering, College of Engineering and Applied Science; Ming Tang, Assistant Professor School of Architecture and Interior Design, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning
  • “Study Abroad: Cultural and Legal Systems of the World” (Canada) – A. Page Beetem, Assistant Professor Legal Studies, UC Clermont College
  • “Exploring Public Health in Ghana” – Jason Blackard, Associate Professor Internal Medicine, College of Medicine
  • “Studio Based Inquiry in Berlin: Research in Theory and Practice” (Germany) – Kristopher Holland, Assistant Professor School of Art and Jordan Tate, Assistant Professor School of Art, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning
  • “Signs of Hope International, Ghana” – Elizabeth Jean-Baptiste, Field Service Assistant Professor Signed Language Interpreting and Deaf Studies, College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services
  • “Development of a Singapore-specific International Academic Internship Course” – Darnice Langford, Professor, Division of Professional Practice
  • “Introduction to Africana Studies” (Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago) – Carolette Norwood, Assistant Professor Africana Studies, McMicken College of Arts and Sciences
  • “Effectiveness in Technical Organizations” (Scotland) – Eugene Rutz, Academic Director and Adjunct Instructor, College of Engineering and Applied Science
  • “Multilingual and Multicultural Experiences in Communication Sciences and Disorders” (Jamaica) – Karla Washington, Assistant Professor Communication Sciences and Disorders, College of Allied Health Sciences
  • “Health Education in Belize” – Bradley Wilson, Professor Health Promotion and Education, College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services
Grant winners will travel between now and July 2012 and will return to campus ready to develop and market their new programs.  Students should look for these new offerings during 2013.
