From the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance:
Banned Books Week Begins Sept. 24
Banned Books Week, which begins Sept. 24, celebrates freedom of expression and the importance of the First Amendment.
Many of the books most often challenged in
the United States are tied to civil and human rights, such as To Kill a
Mockingbird and Heather Has Two Mommies. Censors also target many
books that are bestsellers among young people, including titles in the Harry
Potter series.
