What is IMLD?
IMLD stands for International Mother Language Day. It has been celebrated since the year 2000 to promote all the languages of the world. This Day represents an effective mobilization opportunity for linguistic diversity and multilingualism. Its history dates back to 1952, when four student-activists from the University of Dhaka were gunned down and killed by Dhaka police during an attempt to recognize Bengali as a national language in Pakistan.
What does this mean for UC:
To preserve and promote the vast ethnic diversity at UC, University of Cincinnati Cultural Connections (CC) presents you with our first annual International Mother Language Day Celebration. This event is open to EVERYONE, and ESPECIALLY those who speak another language.
UC’s IMLD is also an attempt to bring awareness of the event that occurred in 1952 – hoping that injustice will not be relived. It can be viewed as a necessity to remind us that not everywhere in the world has equal and fair rights, even for their mother language.
We want to share this celebratory holiday with others by providing different ethnic and cultural foods and fun interactive activities that emphasize various kinds of language immersion. We want to open up the eyes of students, staff and faculty to the beauty that exists in communication through language. If everyone walks away from this with a new found appreciation as well as a full stomach, then our goal will be most certainly met.
