UC Students Respond to Recent Surge of Gay-Related Suicides

UC STUDENTS RESPOND TO RECENT SURGE OF GAY-RELATED SUICIDES
Cincinnati, Ohio -- As part of a national movement, on Wednesday October 20th UC students will be wearing purple to commemorate the youth who committed suicide this past month due to homophobic /transphobic abuse they faced in their schools. Purple represents “spirit” on the Rainbow Flag, which is a symbol of LGBT pride. In collaboration with this national event, students will be hosting three events throughout the day at UC to bring awareness to the harmful effects of anti lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender bullying & harassment.
Book bags with names on them representing those who have committed suicide in the past month will be placed on McMicken Commons. During the day students will write their thoughts and prayers on white flags that will be stuck next to them. Starting promptly at 11:50AM and ending at 11:59AM there will be an “It Gets Better” flashmob that will convene outside between Tangeman University Center and Steger Student Life Center. During this time a message will be released to the student population. Finally, a candlelight vigil will be held at 9:00PM on McMicken Commons to honor the lives of each student.
Within just a few days, over 100 people have already confirmed to come so far on the “Purple Day of Remembrance” Facebook event page. I now would like to extend the same invitation to you to attend what will be undoubtedly a very powerful and moving response to bullying.

First RAPPORT Workshop of 2010-2011 Reflections
For RAPPORT 2010-2011 schedule we've unveiled two types of regular get-togethers:
RAPPORT Meetings – These are what we sometimes call “RAPP Lite.” These are times where we continue our work on social justice issues looking particularly at areas of identity that we didn’t focus on as heavily on in RAPP as we did on race, gender, and sexuality. These include but are not limited to religious differences, socio-economic class, ability, age, and nationality. RAPPORT Meetings may also involve “field trips” to museums or workshops throughout the city.
RAPPORT Facilitation Workshops – These are where we work specifically on exploring issues, expanding knowledge, and developing skills around peer education and facilitation. Topics include but are not limited to learning styles, curriculum development, theoretical foundations of social justice education and experiential learning, giving instructions, group development, and supportive classroom management.
Last night was the first RAPPORT Facilitation Workshop of the year! We had a great time - twelve RAPPORT members participated in the two-hour workshop and were wholeheartedly, FUN-ly engaged.
We spent the initial portion of the workshop doing a series of activities designed to tap into five different ways in which we display intelligences (as posited in Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences). These five activities helped us continue to get to know each other better, but also challenged us each in different ways. The group recorded and later reported out how each of the activities felt to them. By being able to see the ways we reacted differently to different activities the group identified that it was important to lead workshops that not only reach out to different learning styles but also provide participants a variety of ways to express themselves.
Our next get-together is a RAPPORT Meeting on Monday, November 1st. We've got a great group of RAPPORT folk coming out to meetings, so I look forward to each one!

Sexuality and Socialism Talk
This Friday, October 22 at 7PM in McMicken 127, acclaimed author and activist Sherry Wolf will talk about the topic of her most recent book Sexuality and Socialism: History, Politics, and Theory of LGBT Liberation. The presentation will be followed by a moderated discussion and Q&A. Sherry is being brought to the University by the ISO (International Socialist Organization). The I-Word Program - This Wednesday!

On behalf of Ethnic Programs & Services, Latinos En Accion, and the League of United Latin American Citizens, we want to invite you to our upcoming program coming up this week on Wednesday.
Please come and join us from Wednesday, October 20th as we are joined by panelists to discuss and educate the University of Cincinnati student body on the importance of the "I-Word." The "I-Word" is the word "illegal" used by many to describe "illegal immigrants."
The I-Word creates an environment of hate by exploiting racial fear and economic anxiety, creating an easy scapegoat for complex issues, and OK-ing violence against those labeled with the word.
People are not illegal. Let’s stop feeding the hate machine. Drop the I-Word.
