Join UC for Cincinnati Pride on June 30th! - Sign Up Today to be a Parade and/or Festival Volunteer!

From the UC LGBTQ Center:

It’s almost time for Cincinnati Pride! What is Cincinnati Pride you ask? The mission of Cincinnati Pride is to provide the Greater Cincinnati LGBT community and allies a forum celebrating and affirming our individuality and importance to the Greater Cincinnati area by giving expression to our community's rich history and diversity and renewing our dedication to promoting acceptance of all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

They provide information, support local economic growth by partnering with the community to attract individuals to the Greater Cincinnati area, collaborate with other organizations through outreach programs, citizen involvement, and events, and educational resources to those inside and outside of the LGBT community.

This year, the LGBTQ Center, Alliance, Colors of Pride and GenderBloc will not only have a table at Cincinnati Pride representing the University of Cincinnati, but we will also be participating in the Pride Parade which will take place the morning of Saturday, June 30th!

This is where we hope we can get your support. We would love to have a large, strong University of Cincinnati group that will walk with us in the Pride Parade. Below are two links. The first one is a very short survey to see who is available to walk and/or help work the table (greeting folks, passing out information) and the second link is to the Cincinnati Pride website. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Share your availability to walk and/or work the table!

UC Alliance Presents "Open Minded Mic Night" - Mar 7th!

Open Minded Mic Night
Wednesday, March 7, 2012
7PM-9PM

Join UC Alliance at Baba Budan's next Wednesday for a very special event, our second Open Minded Mic Night!

Instead of just another meeting in Swift, we'll be ending winter quarter with something a little more lively and fun. Last spring, we held this event for UC's QueerCat Pride Week, and it was so much fun. Our very own queer open mic night promises a night full of socializing, entertainment, and food & drink specials!

We know you guys are all creative, energetic, and lively spirits, so instead of the officers taking the reins, we want to see you guys in action! Let's talk about sexuality, gender, coming out, or anything else that's on your mind.

Get up on the stage...
share a story.
recite a poem.
sing a song.
do drag.
tell a joke.
do a dance.
play an instrument.
do anything.
be who you are.
be brave.
be open-minded.
speak up.

Open Minded Mic Night is open to the public so spread the word and bring your friends!

Also, afterwards, one of our members Eric Hilson will be hosting his second monthly "Alternative to the Alternative!" event at Baba's.

Muchos besos! Hope to see you all there!!!

Race & Sexuality Program Follow-Up: Thoughts on Inclusion & Exclusion

On Wednesday evening, RAPPORT came together with members of UC Alliance, Genderbloc, Stratford Heights complex, RA Class candidates, ROTC members, The Edge House and other parts of our UC community for a workshop called "Race & Sexuality Dialogue."

The event was organized by Lisa Watkins, RAPP XXIV grad and RA in Stratford Heights.  UC Alliance and GenderBloc helped heavily promote it.  Thanks to everyone's hard work 55+ people participated in this two hour dialogue.

Participants worked through several activities where we explored and shared our experiences throughout life around race and sexuality.  Our final activity of the night involved reacting to a quote and talking about ways we create and/or combat the situation/feelings it describes.

Here's the quote, from Movement in Black by Pat Parker:

If I could take all my parts with me when I go somewhere, and not have to say to one of them, "No, you stay home tonight, you won't be welcome," because I'm going to an all-white party where I can be gay, but not Black.  Or I'm going to a Black poetry reading, and half the poets are antihomosexual, or thousands of situations where something of what I am cannot come with me.  The day all the different parts of me can come along, we would have what I would call a revolution.

In groups, participants reacted to the quote and shared their understanding of it and experiences related to it.

Then, each group compiled a list of things they've seen others do or done themselves that created situations where people felt like the poet described - where only part of themself was welcome rather than the whole.  Below is a word cloud of what the groups stated (the larger the words, the more groups that said it).  Click the picture to see the full image:

The groups also spent time recording things they've seen others do or done themselves that combat situations like the poet described, creating environments where people are welcome as the whole, complex being they are.  Here is a word cloud of that - again, click the image to see the full image:

Many thanks to all the people who attended and participated in the program on Wednesday!

Want a similar program?  Or, any other program?  Be sure to check out the RAPP Outreach page and see what we can do!

UC Students Respond to Recent Surge of Gay-Related Suicides

Press Release from the UC Alliance:

UC STUDENTS RESPOND TO RECENT SURGE OF GAY-RELATED SUICIDES

Cincinnati, Ohio --  As part of a national movement, on Wednesday October 20th UC students will be wearing purple to commemorate the youth who committed suicide this past month due to homophobic /transphobic abuse they faced in their schools.  Purple represents “spirit” on the Rainbow Flag, which is a symbol of LGBT pride.  In collaboration with this national event, students will be hosting three events throughout the day at UC to bring awareness to the harmful effects of anti lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender bullying & harassment.

Book bags with names on them representing those who have committed suicide in the past month will be placed on McMicken Commons.  During the day students will write their thoughts and prayers on white flags that will be stuck next to them.  Starting promptly at 11:50AM and ending at 11:59AM there will be an “It Gets Better” flashmob that will convene outside between Tangeman University Center and Steger Student Life Center.  During this time a message will be released to the student population.  Finally, a candlelight vigil will be held at 9:00PM on McMicken Commons to honor the lives of each student.

Within just a few days, over 100 people have already confirmed to come so far on the “Purple Day of Remembrance” Facebook event page. I now would like to extend the same invitation to you to attend what will be undoubtedly a very powerful and moving response to bullying.

UC Alliance:
UC Alliance aims to develop interpersonal relationships in an educational atmosphere through social activities and advocacy for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community and its allies at the University of Cincinnati.
