Semester Conversion Cookout - May 9th!

Students: Stop by the Conversion Cookout from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Wednesday, May 9. Student Government will be providing free food, and UC advisors will be on hand to answer questions related to semester conversion.
CURRENT CONVERSION EFFORTS FOCUS ON STUDENT IAPS
UC will convert to semesters on Aug. 27, 2012. About half of UC undergraduate students who will make the transition from quarters to semesters on Aug. 27, 2012, have already received their Individual Advising Plans from their academic advisors. More than 10,000 of the approximately 20,000 undergraduate IAPs to be prepared have already been sent to students’ UC e-mail accounts.
His or her IAP will take each transitioning student through the conversion process. It will outline the courses needed and show how quarter credits apply to a semester program. It documents an expected degree-completion term.
Only students who entered and have taken classes at UC prior to Aug. 27, 2012, but who will graduate after August 2012 will need an IAP. In general, the transitioning students who are closest to graduation after August 2012 are completing the IAP and advising processes first, as determined by the UC college from which a student is earning his or her degree.
Each college notifies students via his or her UC e-mail account when a student's IAP is ready for review and approval. Remember, students who will graduate before Aug. 27, 2012, will not need an IAP.
And students who enter UC as of Aug. 27, 2012, will not need an IAP, as their entire academic career will take place under the semester system.
The most important thing students can do in order to achieve a seamless transition is to pay attention to and respond to communications from his or her academic advisor. For instance, if an advisor needs information to complete an IAP, the student would be contacted via his or her UC e-mail. And, as stated above, when a student’s IAP has been prepared by an advisor and is ready for review by the student, that student will receive an e-mail from his or her advisor.
WHAT STUDENTS CAN DO RIGHT NOW
There is a five-step IAP process for students, and any current UC student can take the first step in the process right now.
The five steps are:

Sherrod Brown Presentation "Prevent Student Loan Interest Rates from DOUBLING!" - May 3rd!

From  UC Undergraduate Student Government:

On Thursday May 3rd at 11:00 AM in the 300 level of University Pavilion, United States Senator Sherrod Brown will be speaking about legislation he introduced yesterday intended to prevent interest rates from increasing on Federal Student Loans.

Rates are currently set to double from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1st, which would force 7.4 million American students to pay thousands of dollars more each year in interest.

I encourage everyone who is even slightly interested in student affairs and legislation to attend the rally. Senator Brown is a fantastic public speaker and this issue directly impacts one of UC's main goals as a public institution, providing an affordable and attainable college education for all.

The senator as well as myself would love to see a large number of students there to impress to the media how important the issue of college affordability is to students across the nation and also to show how engaged and passionate our UC students are. I personally believe that this is both a great opportunity and an important responsibility for student government members to serve as the voice of students.

-Cody Clark
Senator Emeritus

Lear Green Speaks: Unpacking the Underground Railroad - Feb 27th!

Lear Green Speaks: Unpacking the Underground Railroad
Celebrating Black History Month!
“Lear Green Speaks: Unpacking the Underground Railroad”

Date: Monday, February 27, 2012
Time: 6PM-8PM
Location: Zimmer Hall Auditorium

Vicie Rolling will present her touching and poignant original interpretation and portrayal of the life of Lear Green, a former slave, who lived the last three years of her life in freedom. The story goes that Ms. Green escaped from slavery, with the help of her future mother-in-law, in a trunk on a ship. Her fiancé and his mother were free persons of color from New York State and after eighteen hours in the trunk she arrived in Philadelphia where she stayed briefly. She arrived in Elmira via the Underground Railroad. Very few people know her story or she lived under the name Elizabeth Adams.

Come join the Office of Ethnic Programs and Services, the African American Cultural and Resource Center, Women’s Center, Department of Africana Studies, the LGBTQ Center, the United Black Student Association, the Counseling Center, Student Government, and Black Arts Collaborative to celebrate the life of Lear Green!

Elect Her Networking Reception - Feb 11th!

UC & Xavier Student Government cordially invites you to attend the Elect Her Networking Reception on February 11th at 3pm in Stratford Heights Pavilion as a culmination to the Elect Her Conference.  Elect Her—Campus Women Win, is a project founded by AAUW and Running Start, and is the only nationwide program that encourages and trains young women to run for student government on their campuses. In a five-hour training on a college campus, Elect Her-Campus Women Win provides students with research and information about women and politics, inspiring local speakers, and interactive campaign exercises.  This year the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University are excited to host U.S. Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, Ohio Representative Denise Driehaus, and City of Cincinnati Councilwoman Yvette Simpson.  We are also pleased to announce that UC’s Director of Public Relations, Greg Hand, will be speaking about “The Importance of Message”.

In 2011, Elect Her-Campus Women Win trained more than 400 participants on 17 campuses. Results show that after the training almost double the number of students said they would run for student government and for political office than before the training. Plus, 100% of the participants reported that they would recommend Elect Her-Campus Women Win to a friend. Read more about Elect Her-Campus Women Win including student success stories and campus-specific blogs at: http://www.aauw.org/learn/LeadershipPrograms/electHer.cfm

As an involved UC female faculty member you have many experiences and stories to share with our Conference attendees.  We hope that you will be able to join us on the 11th for the reception.  Please also feel free to register for the entire day at the following link: http://sites.ucfilespace.uc.edu/sga/node/494. I have attached our Conference flyer and schedule for your information.  Please feel free to pass this information on to any other faculty or students who you think may be interested and please contact me with any questions.
