ELAP Internship in Morocco Summer, 2013

Fund for Education Abroad Works to Increase Number & Diversity of American Undergraduates Studying Abroad

 The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number and diversity of American undergraduate students studying abroad.  We work to reduce financial restrictions for these students and were able to award twelve scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year. 

 

We are now looking for students who are planning to study during the 2013-2014 academic year.  Hoping to reach more students, we have altered our award period, which now includes Summer 2013, Fall 2013, and Spring 2014.  Our deadline has been moved as well, and this year we are accepting applications beginning November 15, 2012 through January 18, 2013.  We hope that this application period is more accessible to students who may not begin considering study abroad over a year ahead of time.

South China Internship Program - Deadline Jan 14th!

South China Internship Program:  Deadline: January 14, 2013

 

Under a new grant from Ford Foundation, the Hong Kong America Center– a non-profit consortium of Hong Kong universities–is announcing the South China Internship Program (SCI) a national competition for 20 American undergraduates to participate in a low-cost, high-quality "tandem internships". The twenty American undergraduates will team-up with twenty same-age Chinese university students to spend eight weeks together in summer 2013 as interns in companies and NGOs in the booming Pearl River Delta of south China. 

 

The intern teams will work together in small teams on joint projects for their company hosts. Inspired by the 100,000 Strong Initiative, HKAC is looking for young Americans with strong academics and high motivation to explore their career potential involving China. Some knowledge of Chinese language is preferred. International Offices in American universities are urged to convey this information to eligible undergraduate students. The deadline for applications is January 14, 2013.

Fellowship in Germany Seeks Students Traditionally Underrepresented in Study Abroad - Deadline Dec 1st!

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a yearlong fellowship to study and intern in Germany, is open to applicants in all career fields, though preference is given to students in vocational, technical, engineering, business, agricultural, and scientific fields.  Students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad opportunities are especially encouraged to apply.

The fellowship is funded by the US and German governments through a grant provided by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961, as amended. 

The CBYX program annually provides 75 participants with two months of intensive German language training, a semester of study at German University or University of Applied Sciences, a five-month internship with a German company in the participant’s career field, housing, transatlantic airfare, health insurance, and a monthly stipend for living expenses.

Prior German language knowledge is not required, though it is preferred.  Applicants should have clear career goals and some relevant work experience in their career field, which may include summer, part-time, or internship work.  Participants must be between the ages of 18-24, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be US citizens or permanent residents.

Interested applicants can apply online at www.CBYX.info.  The application deadline for the 2013-2014 program is December 1, 2012. 

UC Passport Day (Appointments Required) - Nov 15th!

Passport Day is Thursday November 15th 1-5 pm (appointments required)  3134 Edwards Center One; 

 

Passport Day is a great event for anyone who needs a US Passport.  Passports are valid for 10 years and are now required for all international travel including Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean.  You must apply in person for a US Passport and we will have passport officials on campus for Passport Day to make it more convenient for you to apply for a passport.  We will also cover the costs of your passport photos, making it more affordable.  Appointments will be from 1-5 on Thursday November 15th and you must contact UC International to make an appointment atglobal@uc.edu or 556-4278.  Passports cost $135 in total but you will need to break it into two separate checks or money orders for $25 and $110 each.  You will also need to bring your original birth certificate and driver’s license.

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.  Since its inception in 2000, International Education Week (IEW) has grown in size and scope to become a global event, with students, educators, and community leaders participating in a wide range of activities to celebrate the benefits of internationalism in our classrooms and educational systems.

This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Grand Prize Drawing!  Win a free international round trip airline ticket to anywhere in the world ($1500 value) by attending the events with the “   “ designation. 

Student volunteers will be at these events stamping your “passports.”  Passports are free and are available to pick up at each event or at the Student Activity and Leadership Development Office (SALD) in room 455 Steger Life Center.  You must submit your stamped passport to SALD (455 Steger Life) for the Grand Prize drawing prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday to be eligible for the drawing.  To qualify for the drawing, all central campus students must collect at least 3 stamps in the passport. Regional campus students must collect at least 2 stamps.

All events are free and open to the public.

Bringing The Peace Corps Home  Description:      Come listen to returned Peace Corps volunteers and current Master of Community Planning students discuss their Peace Corps experience and its influence on their academic and professional careers, followed by a question and answer panel. Film:  Voices from El-Sayed

Description:      El-Sayed, a Bedouin village nestled in the scenic landscape of the Negev Desert, is home to the largest community of deaf people in the world. Here deafness is seen not as a disability but as a natural part of life.  The hearing and the deaf coexist easily in this remote society, but when one father, Salim, decides to get a cochlear implant for his son Muhammad, members of the tightly knit community have distinct, strong opinions.  For Muhammad, the road to hearing is long, painful, and garbled.  His journey is further complicated by the fact El-Sayed lies outside of Israel’s electric infrastructure, making it nearly possible for his parents to main the implant’s functionality.  With appropriately creative uses of sound, Voices from El-Sayed brings this unique community to life in such a way that we understand how the gift of hearing may feel like the loss of community and identity.  Free food!   Food served is Kosher.

Seeking volunteers for International Education Week!  Nov. 5-16, 2012

This is a great way to earn service hours for Cincinnatus or Turner and enjoy some international activity on campus at the same time.  Blank UC “passports” will be distributed at each event and stamps placed in each one for any student attending. We also need to hand out and collect evaluations. The evals help us to improve the program next year and let us know what went well this year.

There are EIGHT upcoming training sessions offered from 12:15-12:45 p.m.  Feel free to pack a lunch and bring it with you!  All volunteers will get a free T-shirt and must attend just one of these sessions so that we can briefly explain where/how help is needed.  Please consider volunteering by registering for an upcoming October training session online here!

Program Description:  This 14-week course will focus on how to develop sustainable business ventures  as a vehicle to solve social  problems.  Students will partner with an Indian non-governmental organization (NGO)  committed to empower, educate, and rehabilitate sexually exploited women and children from rural India.  While in India over spring break, students will study the NGO, develop a sustainable business model for the NGO, talk with entrepreneurs, and listen to the women’s stories.  Class projects will include digital storytelling as a way to assist the NGO to spread their story and expand their mission.   “Give voice, create solutions, and transform lives.”

Study Abroad Expo - Oct 3rd!

With more international education opportunities available now than ever before, the UC community will get a chance for a global overview on Wednesday, October 3rd, when UC International Programs convenes its 2012 Programs Abroad Expo.

This year’s Expo takes place at Bearcat Plaza (outside of TUC) from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., with an alternate rain location of the TUC Atrium. Over 50 exhibits will be set up to help highlight all aspects of international education at UC.

This will be the ninth year for the expo, which can conveniently serve as a one-stop option for students and faculty interested in learning more about UC’s international options. During the 2011-12 academic year, approximately 850 UC students had an international experience as part of their education. About half of the participants will represent UC programs, with the other half from a variety of universities and educational travel groups from around the world.

In addition to the educational opportunities, the event will also include door prizes. We appreciate your support and interest in supporting educational opportunities abroad for our students

Volunteers Needed for Programs Abroad Expo - Oct 3rd!

Programs Abroad Expo  - Weds., October 3^rd from 10-2 on Bearcat Plaza – We are seeking volunteers!

This is your chance to do “one stop shopping” for education abroad opportunities on one day.  Around 50 booths representing programs in more than 50 countries will be featured in the University of Cincinnati’s Programs Abroad Expo. The annual expo, sponsored by UC International Programs will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3rd on Bearcat Plaza between TUC and the rec center (rain location:  TUC atrium).

UC students will have the chance to learn about UC programs offering overseas study as well as programs offered by other organizations and partner universities. There will also be information about financial aid and scholarships that can be used to help cover program expenses such as the UC International Programs Student Grant, which has increased funding to over $450,000 given away annually. Door prizes will also be given away in random drawings.

A distinguished marketing professor, currently director of UC’s honors program, has been selected to lead the office responsible for University of Cincinnati international programs, services and planning.

   Raj Mehta has been named Vice Provost for International Affairs at the University of Cincinnati.  Mehta, a member of UC’s marketing faculty since 1990, will continue his role and responsibilities as director of UC’s University Honors program. The appointment is effective July 16.

“After much deliberation and discussion regarding the search for a new Vice Provost for International Affairs, I am convinced that the best leader for this role was not in the candidate pool but rather served on the search committee,” said Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Santa J. Ono. “Raj Mehta was tapped to chair this search because of his deep knowledge of the global context, his broad interest in advancing international programming and partnerships and his longstanding commitment to engaging faculty, staff and alumni in strengthening UC’s global identity and impact. As much as these skills and attributes made him an excellent chair, they make him the best leader to move UC International to the next level.”

Mehta earned his Ph.D. from the University of Utah after earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and a master’s in marketing from Gujarat University. He has directed the University Honors Program since 2006.

“I am a lifelong believer, and a living example, of the benefits of international experience,” Mehta said. “As director of the University Honors Program, I helped set a goal for graduating 75 percent of our students with a study abroad experience.” says Mehta. “A global outlook is an invaluable component of our students’ educations, and an essential priority for a world-class university like UC.”

As Vice Provost, Mehta will play a critical role in the University’s plan to enhance its national standing and strengthen its contributions to the surrounding region and to society at large, Ono said. He will be responsible for overall operation of the UC International office, including oversight of UC’s international programs, services and planning. In doing so, he will work with faculty to develop curricula with strong international components, assist with recruitment of international students, and enhance institutional support for incoming students in areas such as new student orientation, language training, and assimilation programming.

“My role is to champion the importance of UC’s engagement with global cultures and to integrate UC’s diverse activities as part of an overall strategy for the University’s international presence,” Mehta said.
