CCM Announces New Community Engagement Initiatives

From UC News:

CCM Announces New Community Engagement Initiatives Fueled by 2012-13 ArtsWave Grant

By partnering with several area organizations, UC's College-Conservatory of Music looks to provide under-served communities with new opportunities for education and participation in the performing arts.

Date: 1/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
By: Curt Whitacre
Phone: (513) 556-2683

UC ingot   The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is proud to announce several new collaborations supported by a grant from ArtsWave. Awarded in June 2012, CCM’s $50,000 ArtsWave Community Partnership grant was designed to develop mutually beneficial projects that will advance both organizations’ goals for the community and the arts sector.

ArtsWave’s generous support will help CCM enhance its current collaborative relationship with the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) and will also allow CCM to formalize new partnerships with several community outreach programs, almost all of which were initiated by CCM faculty, students or alumni.

These partnerships are designed to provide under-served geographies and populations in Cincinnati with direct access to CCM faculty and alumni, along with students, staff and administrators. The initial community partners include:

• SCPA – ArtsWave funding will allow CCM to expand its collaborative relationship with SCPA, creating new opportunities for SCPA students to:
  • receive assistance from faculty members of both CCM and the CCM Preparatory Department (CCM Prep), who will help guide students through college application requirements, prepare for auditions and more.
  • audition before a “mock” panel of CCM faculty and administrators to help students prepare for college entrance.
  • collaborate with CCM on joint performances.
• The Cincinnati Out Reach (COR) Music Project – ArtsWave funding will help CCM support the COR Music Project’s teaching artists.

The Congressional Hunger Center (CHC) is excited to offer a unique opportunity to be actively involved in the movement to end hunger and poverty. CHC is a bi-partisan organization committed to making access to nutritious, affordable and culturally appropriate food a national priority. Every year, we look for promising young leaders who care about addressing the problems of hunger and poverty in communities across the nation. Our national initiative, the Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellows Program, trains, inspires and sustains a tight-knit community of emerging leaders committed to social justice. The program provides Fellows with an opportunity to gain practical experience fighting hunger and poverty, work with community-based and national leaders, deepen their analysis around poverty and develop leadership skills.  Each year, 16- 20 Emerson National Hunger Fellows help shape and implement local social justice programs all over the U.S. and then research and support national policy initiatives in Washington, DC.
Participants are selected for this eleven-month program based on the criteria below.  Fellows are placed for five months with urban and rural community organizations involved in fighting hunger at the local level, such as grassroots organizing groups, food banks, advocacy organizations, economic development agencies, and local government offices.  They then move to Washington, D.C. to complete the year with five months of work at advocacy and public policy organizations involved in anti-hunger and anti-poverty work at the national level.  This unique program allows Fellows to bridge community grassroots efforts and national public policy. Applications are encouraged from candidates reflecting diverse educational, cultural, personal and experiential backgrounds.

Nursing Students Help People Experiencing Homelessness "Winterize"

From UC HealthNews:
Nursing Students Help Homeless 'Winterize' for Pending Weather

When temperatures drop, we reach for the simple things: hats, gloves, scarves, socks and the like. When you’re homeless, however, the simple things can be far out of reach.

On Nov. 16, UC nursing students extended a helping hand by distributing much-needed winter items to Cincinnati’s homeless at the second annual "Winterize Yourself” event, a program developed in partnership with the college’s nursing student government and the local administration of a national organization called Health Care for the Homeless.

For the 2012 event students, faculty and staff collected nearly 2,000 cold weather accessories in a friendly competition between faculty/staff and students. As in 2011, the student donations far exceeded their competitors, but at the event, which this year was held at Our Daily Bread soup kitchen and ministry in Over-the-Rhine, everyone joined together to promote relevant health care education and assistance to the homeless.

Student representatives from the BSN, RN to BSN and MSN programs also assisted faculty with health care screenings such as blood pressure checks and administering flu vaccines.

"The students who participated in the event were thrilled, and touched by the response of those who attended,” says faculty coordinator Rebecca Lee, PhD, who also serves on the board of directors of Cincinnati Health Network (CHN), a private, nonprofit organization established in 1986 to coordinate local service and programs for medically underserved and vulnerable population groups throughout Greater Cincinnati.

Lee, and senior BSN nursing student Michael Winter, president of the college’s nursing tribunal, which is the undergraduate student governing body, oversaw the college’s 2011 participation and stepped up to take the lead again in 2012.

"I am incredibly proud of the selflessness and generosity that our students, faculty, and staff demonstrate each year and of the leadership that the tribunal executive board represents. Community service has always been at the forefront of my belief system and I am highly impressed with the impact students have stated this event had on them.”

After witnessing an elderly woman cry upon receiving a pair of socks, Kaitlin Caponi, who is studying to be a family nurse practitioner, was moved to think about homelessness in an entirely different context: "It hit me that a pack of socks costs like 10 dollars and I don’t even think twice about buying socks … but a pair of socks was all this woman wanted, and when she got them it was as if she hit the lottery.

"It was truly heartwarming,” says Caponi.

It’s a sentiment echoed by UC East BSN student Erica Rossignol, who knows American Sign Language and provided care to a woman who was deaf.

Rossignol says that the woman hadn’t been able to communicate with anyone in so long that she kept signing over and over again, "Thank you.”

Having delivered over 100 gift bags with the collected items, Lee says "the attendees and organizers were overwhelmed at the generosity of the students, faculty and staff.”

CHA is looking for volunteers to work with us at after school programs serving children K-8 at schools, YMCA’s and Boys and Girls Clubs around the Greater Cincinnati Area from October 2012-August 2013. Volunteer times are usually around 3:30pm-4:30pm and can be Mondays-Fridays, you can volunteer as much or as little as you would like.

At these sites we teach a Food Folks program where we make healthy snacks with the children and teach them about healthy alternatives within in the food pyramid. We also have a CATCH PE program where we work with the children in a “gym” setting playing all kinds of games with a goal for the children to reach moderate to vigorous activity. These two programs are part of CHA’s vision to end childhood hunger and obesity.

Volunteers would be helping with answering children’s questions and playing CATCH games with the children or anything else that interests you. It is a very fun and rewarding experience that brings a little Neverland to college routines. UC Student Sustainability Summit - Oct 12th-14th!

From UC Sustainability:
University of Cincinnati Sustainability Summit 2012
The Student Sustainability Summit at the University of Cincinnati (UC) began in the spring of 2011. Its ever-evolving aim is to train the next generation of students to become competent and confident leaders in sustainable initiatives on campus and in our community. The beauty of each Summit is that it simultaneously connects many sustainable student groups on campus, while also improving each individual's capacity to lead new projects and engage even more students to continue the cause. The Summit is a microcosm of sustainability in that it has become self-sustaining by training new students to lead it each year.

This year's Summit will take place at General Butler State Park in Carroll, Kentucky. Students will arrive Friday, October 12th at 4PM and stay until Sunday, October 14th at Noon. All food and housing will be provided for the entire weekend. There is a $20 deposit required for all Summit attendees that will be returned at the end of the weekend. Choices for the skill sessions and professional speaker series are first come first serve. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact the co-directors of Sustainability Mark Schutte or Ron Gillespie.
