Fund for Education Abroad Works to Increase Number & Diversity of American Undergraduates Studying Abroad

 The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number and diversity of American undergraduate students studying abroad.  We work to reduce financial restrictions for these students and were able to award twelve scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year. 

 

We are now looking for students who are planning to study during the 2013-2014 academic year.  Hoping to reach more students, we have altered our award period, which now includes Summer 2013, Fall 2013, and Spring 2014.  Our deadline has been moved as well, and this year we are accepting applications beginning November 15, 2012 through January 18, 2013.  We hope that this application period is more accessible to students who may not begin considering study abroad over a year ahead of time.

The inaugural scholarship(s) of $500 for student employees will be awarded for the 2013 spring semester.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to at least one student employee working at the university who meets the following criteria:

• The student must be enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Cincinnati (UC);
• The student must be employed by the university as a enrolled student employee at the time of application for the scholarship and award;
• The student must have completed or is in the process of completing two semesters of academic work and hold a cumulative university grade point average of 3.0 or better; and
• The student must submit the required forms including a reference from their supervisor at the university.

Determination of the scholarship recipient will be based on:

1) Completion of the required forms;
2) Demonstrated need for the scholarship;
3) Demonstrated work as a student employee; and
4) Supervisor review and comments.

Application forms are available on the Campus Services website and are due on or before Friday, Nov. 30.

A well-known Bearcat, Larry Elsasser, Ed ’65, MEd ’73, served as a UC employee for 35 years. For most of those years, Larry served as the director of Tangeman University Center.

In 2011, the staff of Campus Services established the Larry Elsasser Memorial Scholarship Fund with the UC Foundation. A university committee consisting of representatives from Campus Services and Student Affairs & Services will review all applications submitted for the scholarship. Scholarship winner(s) will be announced the week of December 10.

Udall Scholarship for Sophomores & Juniors Committed to the Environment

The Udall Scholarship awards sophomore and junior level college students in three categories:

1. Students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment; 
2. Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy; 
3. Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care.

Rafael Rennella Scholarship - Application Due April 30th!

Rafael Rennella Scholarship Information 2011-2012
Purpose:
To recognize and reward students on campus who have demonstrated leadership and motivational qualities through active participation in student groups dedicated to serving the University of Cincinnati and Greater Cincinnati Latino community.

Rafael Rennella

History of the Rennella Scholarship:
Rafael Rennella was a student leader at the University of Cincinnati.  He came to Cincinnati from Argentina in 1979 and eventually earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering at U.C. in 1994.  Rafael left a legacy of service and accomplishment.  Always true to his ethnic roots, Rafael founded the Hispanic Engineers at the University of Cincinnati, devoted long hours to the Emerging Ethnic Engineers program and helped found Latinos en Acción, a student organization active in political and social causes on campus.  He served as president of Latinos en Acción in 1994-1995.
Upon graduating from U.C., Rafael began working with Procter & Gamble as a systems analyst.  Rafael’s life and labor were cut short at the age of 26 when he died of an asthma attack in 1995.  Shortly thereafter, students, staff, faculty, alumni and P&G employees organized to develop a plan to raise $25,000 towards an endowment goal.

RAPP Community Connections

It's been a quiet week here on the RAPP blog, but not for lack of activity on campus.  Rather, RAPP and its staff/blog team have been a busy bunch.  As a chance to highlight some of the work we do, here's an overview of the community connections we've been involved in this week:

• Monday & Wednesday morning through early afternoon, RAPP partnered with the LGBTQ Center to provide campus diversity workshops to first year students in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business. Social Justice League member Bobby Filbin, LGBTQ Center graduate assistant B Carbonara, and Rebecca connected with almost 350 students in eight fifty-minute workshops.
• Monday evening, RAPP Public Ally Marjorie Bledsoe and RAPPORT Intern DeVorah YisraEL facilitated a RAPPORT workshop on multiple intelligences & planning inclusive learning experiences.  A dozen people came out to explore our ways of learning and sharing knowledge as well as how to include all learners in educational experiences.
• On Tuesday, Rebecca connected with one of the nearly one hundred First Year Experience Learning Communities for an outreach session.  Each year we work with at least a dozen first year learning communities, exploring campus diversity, self-awareness, and intercultural communication.
• Tuesday evening, we hosted one of our newer activities for RAPP XXVII Tuesday - between session conference calls.  The group asked to try phone check-ins between meetings, so we've set up multiple conference call sessions this quarter.
• In exploration of expanding our partnership with Emerging Ethnic Leaders, Rebecca worked with the advisor for EEL to begin sketching out a formal relationship between our programs for some exciting developments RAPP has in the works (stay tuned here for how to be involved in that!).
• International Education Week is a university-wide program spearheaded by UC International.  SALD participates annually in this great series of events that help our students build global citizenship.  RAPP staff and other SALD staff participated in the kick-off planning meeting for the fall 2012 program.
• As a Student Life staff member and UC alumna herself, Rebecca commits time to supporting some of our major undergraduate scholarships.  This week involved much work with the selection process for the Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program as well as preparing and presenting a Student Life session for competitors in the Cincinnatus Scholarship Program.  The latter program involved highlighting Student Life's countless connections with the University Honors Program.  RAPP XXV member Alyssa Roberts helped present about her leadership journey, including RAPP's contribution to it.
• Our campus community has experienced several racial incidents lately, some public and some not.  While RAPP no longer coordinates the Racial Incident Team (which we did in the late 1980s through mid-1990s), our staff do provide listening ears and responsive educational programming.  Work in this area has been underway this week, as well.

All of this came directly after Rebecca's return from the Social Justice Training Institute 2 & Celebration in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Marjorie's return from 2012 Tri-State Diversity Conference: Diverse Communities - Common Unity in the Cincinnati Airport Marriot.

PFLAG Scholarships - Applications Due Apr 20th!

Each year PFLAG Cincinnati offers scholarships to students residing in or attending college in the Greater Cincinnati area.  The purpose of the scholarship program is to reward students who help to fulfill PFLAG's missions of support, education, and advocacy.

Since the program's inception in 1992, PFLAG has awarded over $125,000 in scholarships to over 100 talented and deserving gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight-supportive college students.

Applicants are reviewed by the PFLAG Scholarship Committee. Awardees are announced during Pride month at the June PFLAG meeting each year.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was founded January 15th, 1908 on the campus of Howard University. We are the first black sorority whose mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards among college women. The Omicron chapter chartered on the University of Cincinnati on April 9, 1921, just a few months shy of her 91st birthday, has a long legacy here at the university with empowering and uplifting women. In addition to this, the Omicron Chapter is dedicated to offering the same enrichment to the gentlemen of UC’s campus.

That being said Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, The Omicron chapter is holding an all male Pageant on April 6th, 2012. The King of Pearls is a pageant that will focus on uplifting the males on our campus. The men will be vying not only for the title of King of Pearls but they are also in competition for a scholarship and the chance to be able to program around their selected platform with the chapter.

The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund

The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has applications available for student activists who are building progressive movements for social change and will be enrolled in school during the 2012-13 academic year.

Since 1961 the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has provided need-based grants to students who are involved in building movements for social and economic justice and are able to do academic work at the college level. Grantees are both graduates and undergraduates enrolled in accredited schools for the period covered by their grant. Although citizenship is not a consideration, applicants must be participating in activities in the US and plan to enroll in an accredited program in the US in order to qualify.

The maximum grant is $10,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the applicant's circumstances and the funding available. All the funds come from individual donors and there are 25-30 grants awarded each year. Grants are for one year although students may re-apply for subsequent years.

Applications and the supporting documents -- transcripts, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, a photograph, financial aid reports -- must be postmarked by April 1, 2012. Those selected to receive a grant will be notified in July.

Current and incoming students are invited to apply for four distinct scholarship opportunities, two of which benefit direct descendants of UC alumni.

Kacher-Bloom Memorial Scholarship
In recognition and remembrance of former UC students Margaret Kacher and Sheri Ann Bloom. In 1985, UC suffered the loss of both of these promising young women to untimely deaths. Eligibility requirements include:

• Current full-time Junior at UC
• Excellence in academics 
• Devotion to student activities and community service 
• Strong sense of loyalty and commitment to the University of Cincinnati
• Application deadline: February 28, 2012

UCAA Undergraduate Legacy Scholarship
Eligibility requirements include:

• Current full-time UC Freshman, Sophomore or Junior
• Parent or Grandparent attended UC and is a current Loyal Bearcat or William Howard Taft Society Donor.
• GPA of 3.0 or higher 
• Application deadline: March 5, 2012

Martha Kidd Scholarships - Due Feb 1st!

The Martha Kidd Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not for profit corporation whose mission includes providing scholarships for post-secondary education to deserving students with financial need. 

Through its scholarship awards, the Foundation seeks to bridge the gap between higher education and those who seek it. The Foundation is especially interested in those individuals whose course in life may not have provided or permitted the pursuit of higher education through the usual or normal channels or timelines. In emphasizing it is never too late to enter or return to the halls of academia the Foundation, through this Scholarship, hopes to empower people by providing academic opportunity that will ultimately lead to an improved quality of life.

The Foundation will provide a $1000 scholarship to 3 recipients for the 2012-2013 academic year. Please encourage your students to apply by February 1, 2012.

Grants for 2011-2012 Positions in Spain - Deadline Mar 31st!

CULTURAL AMBASSADORS: North American Language and Culture Assistants in Spain

The Education Office of the Embassy of Spain is offering over 2,000 grants to North American students to spend the 2011-2012 school year in Spain working as part-time Language & Culture Assistants in English classes at the K-12 level.

The program begins in mid-September and ends in mid-June. The program requires that the applicants hold a U.S. or Canadian passport; be a native English speaker; be a junior or senior college student or have completed a BA, BS, MA, or MS; and have intermediate- to advanced-level Spanish skills.

Working 12-16 hours a week under the supervision and guidance of a classroom teacher, grantees will receive a minimum monthly allowance of 700 euros. Grants are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

2nd Annual Oratorical Tea Rose Contest

Free Spring Break Program to South Korea - Applications due Jan 14th!

All expense paid Spring Break program to South Korea with CIEE! Apply by January 14, 2011

CIEE has partnered with the Korea Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of Korea, to offer an all expense paid scholarship for 75 U.S. university students to take part in the Korea—U.S. Youth Network 2011. Selected participants will spend one week in South Korea from March 18-26, 2011. This program is designed for students who have had little to no previous exposure to Korean culture. Students are hosted by Yonsei University located in Seoul, South Korea. Yonsei will organize academic lectures, tours, and cultural excursions throughout the program.

Applicants must have completed one semester of university courses, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must demonstrate through the application process their flexibility, maturity, adaptability, and readiness to face challenges of interacting in a new culture.

The application deadline is January 14, 2011.

The scholarship covers the following: International flight to and from South Korea from a designated U.S. Gateway city, housing, meals, lectures and excursions. Participants are responsible for their travel expenses to and from the U.S. gateway city. This program is the perfect opportunity for students who do not have time to spend a full semester or academic year abroad, but are looking for a short term opportunity to explore Korean culture.

Up to four awards will be available to pursue projects around an aspect of international contemporary or popular music as a cultural force for expression.  Preference will be given to creative projects that are conveyed in a dynamic fashion and are accompanied by a feasible plan.  In addition to presenting unique projects on music as a global force for mutual understanding, applicants must submit a Documentation and Outreach Plan describing how they intend to share their activities with their peers during their Fulbright year abroad through mtvU print, broadcast and/or online mediums. The Documentation and Outreach Plan form must be submitted as part of the Fulbright application.

Applicants are encouraged to consider all aspects of the power of music in developing their proposals.  Along with the study of music in a specific cultural context, proposals will be considered in other music-related fields including music and social activism, music in learning, music and the community, and musical performance.

Preference will be given to graduating seniors who meet all host country requirements, including those related to language, affiliation and program start dates.  Please refer to the Participating Country Summaries for details. Applications for all countries where there is an active U.S. Student Fulbright Program are encouraged.

Joan Herschede Scholarship Applications Available - Due Dec 22nd!

The Joan R. Herschede Profiles in Courage Scholarship honors the legacy of Mrs. Herschede, the first female Board of Director at Fifth Third Bank and her philanthropic commitment to the Cincinnati community.

In the spirit of giving back and empowering women, Fifth Third is pleased to establish this scholarship in recognition of our friend and supporter.

The recipient of the Joan R. Herschede Profiles in Courage Scholarship will be an African-American female student from the University of Cincinnati. In addition to demonstrating a financial need, the scholarship recipient will be an example of a Profile in Courage in her own right, someone who has overcome challenges and met them head on and won.

Finally, the student should be in good standing and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Applications are due Wednesday, December 22, 2010.
