The Teach For America – Las Vegas Valley & the Zappos Family of Companies Alternative Spring Break is intended to spark bold, new innovations that expand opportunities and close the achievement gap in the Las Vegas Valley community.
Who: You must be a freshman, sophomore, or junior in college. We are seeking applicants who are passionate about and driven by the objective of expanding opportunities for all children, especially in low income communities. Additionally, we are looking for participants who are risk-friendly and open to trying out new approaches or taking less-familiar pathways.

Three Upcoming Service Opportunities: College Goal Sunday, OGT Prep, Fight for Air Climb

College Goal Sunday 2013: January 26, February 10 Su Casa was founded in 1997 as a response to the sudden increase in the numbers of immigrants arriving to Cincinnati from Mexico and the rest of Latin America. Su Casa was the first organization in the Cincinnati region to focus on the Latino Community and the influx of immigrants to the area. The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is looking for bilingual volunteers (English/ Spanish) to assist high school students completing their Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). Fight For Air Climb: February 17 American Lung Association works to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. The Fight For Air Climb is a stair climb challenge to raise money and awareness to support local lung disease education programs, research and advocacy. Participants of the Climb will climb the 45 flights of stairs up the Carew Tower to fundraise for the organization. This event brings UC and XU students together for a day of service that honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrates the connection with our crosstown counterparts. Students will meet at UC in the Stratford Heights Pavilion for a light breakfast then disperse to awesome service projects throughout the city. This spring you’ll get a chance to have a hands-on experience at the CCAC volunteering at the Spring Cleaning project in March. Green-Up Day – April 13^th

Mark your calendar for April 13^th to get your hands dirty! UC volunteers will be cleaning up Burnet Woods, just across the street from campus. Green-Up Day involves mitigating invasive species, fishing trash out of the pond, laying down mulch and getting the park ready for the entire community to enjoy this spring and summer. Volunteers will get pizza for lunch and a free ticket to a Cincinnati Reds baseball game!

Crosstown Help Out: A Joint Service Day between UC & Xavier - Jan 21st/MLK Day!

The Crosstown Helpout will be a joint service day between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. Students from both campuses will be meeting together at Stratford Heights Pavilion, and then groups will be breaking out to different service sites around the city to work on projects. It will be a collaborative event to promote closer affiliation between the two schools in the spirit of community.

The event will be on January 21, 2013 (MLK Day). Registration will begin at 8:15am with a light breakfast. The Center for Community Engagement is partnering with the Freestore Foodbank to deliver basic necessities to our neighbors in need during the holiday season and cold winter months. Donations will be accepted at numerous campus locations and select home athletic events from October 16th - November 2nd. The Freestore Foodbank distributes over 12 million pounds of food annually in 20 counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana--but their mission is much greater than simply feeding the hungry. The Freestore Foodbank connects with individuals to provide food and services while working to create stability, and further self-reliance for people in crisis.

The Cans & Coats Drive seeks donations of non-perishable food, winter coats, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks for distribution to the most vulnerable among us.

Collection at Athletic Events

The Athletic Department has stepped up to partner in this drive with the goal of collecting 2,000 cans. In addition to the on campus collection barrels, donations will also be collected at home UC athletic contests.

• Men’s Soccer vs. Louisville: October 27th, Gettler Stadium, 7:00p
• Volleyball vs. Louisville: October 28th, Fifth Third Arena, 1:00p

The most needed food items include: canned fruits and vegetables, tuna, chicken and soups. All sizes of coats and gently used or new winter clothing is needed, especially larger sized coats. Donations will be accepted October 16th - November 2nd on campus.

UC Poll Cats - Serve, Learn, and Earn - Applications Due Oct 1st!

UC Poll Cats: Serve, Learn and EARN!

UC Poll Cats gives students who are at least 17 years old the opportunity to work for the Board of Elections on Election Day, Tuesday November 6, 2012. The average age of a poll worker is 72, voting equipment and election laws are becoming much more complex, polling place hours are long and working at the polls requires moving and setting up voting machines. As a result, from time to time there is a need to fill vacancies when Poll Workers retire and the BOE seeks to recruit 18 to 31 year olds to assist voters with electronic voting equipment and new voting procedures.

In addition to compensation of $161.50, the poll work enables students to acquire a real life-hands on civics lesson in the voting process, provides a meaningful community service experience, and an entry point for students to become engaged in the electoral process. Students will be paid for:

• Attending a 3-hour training class (classes are held at a central location near campus)
• Working from 7:00 -8:30 p.m. on Monday November 5, the night before Election Day to help set up the polling place.
• Working on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. to about 9:00 p.m.

In appropriate classes UC instructors may also agree by signing the student’s application form to award credit for a course assignment in conjunction with the poll work.
All poll workers must:

• Be at least 17 years old
• Be US Citizens and residents of Hamilton County.
• Be registered to vote (even if they are 17 years old).
• Attend a 3-hour training course
• Come to Monday night Polling Place set up from 7-8:30 pm
• Provide their own transportation to the polls on Election Day.
• Not have a felony conviction, unless reversed, expunged or pardoned

Into the Streets 2012

On Saturday, September 22nd, the Center for Community Engagement will kick-off an exciting year of service by sending hundreds of volunteers Into the Streets for one of the largest one-day service projects at the University of Cincinnati.

Into the Streets is an annual event during which UC students, faculty, and staff volunteer their time and effort to a range of service organizations for a full day at the start of the academic year. Breakfast and lunch is provided for all volunteers!

Key partners for Into the Streets 2012 include Keep Cincinnati Beautiful and theNeighborhood Enhancement Program to focus and integrate services and community redevelopment efforts. Efforts will be focused in the Pendleton neighborhood to meet community-identified needs through this nationally acclaimed program. This year Into the Streets will also be teaming up with Building Hope in the City - Cincinnati, and the student group Cincinnati Community Outreach.

The UC Center for Community Engagement is seeking students to apply for the Annie Fitzgerald Award for Leadership and Service for next year. The award is given out yearly to three UC undergraduate students who possess a deep passion for community engagement. Students must be currently participating in community service, service learning or other areas of engagement in their community.

The Award Amounts are:
$2,000 - One first place winner
$1,000 - Two second place winners

Student Requirements/Eligibility:

• Enrolled at the University of Cincinnati (full-time)
• Undergraduates only 
• All majors are encouraged to apply
• Scholarship will be awarded within Academic Year 2011 and can be applied to Fall 2010, Winter 2010, or Spring 2010 quarter payments.

Application Process:
Please submit the following to the Center for Community Engagement:

• Essay: Write an essay no more than 1000 words about your community involvement this year.  Consider the following questions:
  • Why is it important to volunteer or give back to your community?
  • What made you interested in community service and/or service learning?
  • What does your community mean to you?
  • Have you showed leadership or initiative in a service project or organization?
• Two letters of recommendation or reference  
• Resume  

Applications will be accepted December 13, 2010 - January 21, 2011

 Email or drop off your application at the Center for Community Engagement office - 2639 Clifton Avenue, Startford Heights, Building # 19 - by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2011. 


Applicants will be alerted of their scholarship application status by March 25, 2011.
