UC Turner Scholar Strives to Build a Better Understanding of Latino Cultures

University of Cincinnati freshman Tiffany Simons of Springdale, Ohio, is not letting any injury slow her down, despite using a motorized scooter to navigate campus during fall semester. The 18-year-old Darwin T. Turner Scholar – an e-media (College-Conservatory of Music) and Spanish (McMicken College of Arts and Sciences) major – is truly taking the campus by storm, according to her Turner Scholar advisors.
UC’s Office of Ethnic Programs and Services directs the Darwin T. Turner Scholarship Program to promote academic success, foster diversity and build future leaders.
Simons is an outstanding example in her pursuit of scholarship and leadership. Her physical setback is due to a muscle injury that developed over time from dancing, intense workouts and lifting. She says it was further aggravated after tryouts for the Indianapolis Colts cheerleading squad, as well as the UC Dhadak International Dance Team. “I was selected for the dance team, but had to sit out because of the muscle injury,” she says.
Simons also says she is a rather exceptional example of multiculturalism. “I think I represent every culture but Asian.” It was her interest in identifying with her Latino heritage and her Hispanic friends in high school that led to her pursuit of perfecting her Spanish and educating others about the culture.
Simons’ passion for building bridges of understanding of Latino cultures evolved into her website, Qué Hay De Nuevo (What’s New). She also belongs to the UC student organizations, Latinos En Accion and Club Hispano. She hopes to become a bilingual broadcast journalist.
The Darwin T. Turner scholarship is named in honor of a UC alumnus who later became one of the greatest scholars in African-American literature. In 1947 and at age 16, Darwin T. Turner became the youngest person ever to graduate from the University of Cincinnati when he earned a bachelor’s degree in English. He earned his master’s degree in English in 1949.
The Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program was founded at the university in 1976. Turner scholars are expected to participate in activities under the Office of Ethnic Programs and Services to improve their intellectual, personal and professional development.
“One of our recent service-related Turner activities was participating in the BRIDGES Walk for a Just Community,” says Simons. The annual walk downtown is a celebration to promote diversity, inclusion and social justice.
“It’s not just a scholarship program,” says Simons. “Every week, we get together to get resume tips and talk about how we’re doing in school. The staff in Ethnic Programs and Services is our backbone. They’re someone to turn to if we need to talk. As a Turner Scholar, we make the commitment to visit the office at least once a week.”
“We call ourselves the Turner Family, and we provide programs for leadership, networking and professionalism – anything we can do to get the student acclimated to college and on the path to success,” says program director Brandi Elliott.
“Tiffany has truly embraced the Darwin T. Turner Scholarship program,” says Elliott. “She’s a self-starter and is so creative – just full of life and energy. I’m looking forward to seeing what she’ll accomplish at UC over the next four years.”
Elliott is a 2001 graduate from the Turner Scholars Program. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology (A&S) and then achieved a master’s degree from UC in mental health counseling, before earning her doctorate in urban educational leadership from the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH).
Simons also lives in Darwin T. Turner Hall, which was dedicated on campus in 2002. It was the newest residence hall to be constructed on campus since 1971.

of preparing to shoot an infomercial to recruit members for RAPP XXVIII.

you enjoyed about your RAPP experience and why you think RAPP is important to UC's campus.

A Much Needed Update
In checking out the new blog interface (the behind the scenes part we use to post here), I found that this post from around two years ago never actually went up. This is not a video that's been in use since looking for RAPP XXV, but I thought it good to go ahead and let this post finally have its day. I thought it went up two years ago!

One of the amazing but challenging parts of RAPP is the continual process of self-evaluation and acknowledging the ways in which we perpetuate oppression in our daily lives. I finally have dealt with one of those that's been bugging me for a while.
Back in December I made a little "video" for RAPP (shown in an earlier post). Right away I caught a few typos and less-than-quality photos that needed to be swapped out. But, I never fixed those. A while later I realized another big issue. But, I kept using the same excuses - I hate MovieMaker, no one else will notice, I just don't have time - to avoid fixing it.
Considering how much it bugged me, it's sad that I took this long to finally start fixing it (the issue transfered over to later videos with the same format/different songs). If you watch the section on how RAPP "A place to teach others," nearly all the active people in the pictures were White.
I think the biggest (somewhat) unconscious excuse I used to take so long to fix it was having to 'fess up that I perpetuated the all-too-common racist assumption that White people have the most to teach others.

Register Now for RAPP 25 Year Reunion
The RAPP 25 Year Reunion is only a few weeks away!
All former and current RAPPers are invited to participate in this exciting event celebrating a quarter century of RAPP work at the University of Cincinnati. The reunion is Saturday, May 14th and is being held in the Myers Alumni Center.
All participants are being asked to register at www.regonline.com/RAPP by May 1st. Registration is free for most - alumni who can are asked to may a $10 donation, but the event is free for current students, recent graduates, and those who can't pay.
Whether you're able to attend or not, we're encouraging RAPPers to share their reflections on and memories of RAPP here. Take a few minutes to share yours!

Another Video
I'm still learning the site through which I'll make videos this year, and here's my first attempt at text+photos:
These videos (well, once we have more than one) will run on a loop at Student Spotlight at Bearcat Bound Orientation. They'll also go up on the YouTube and - once we have access again to updating the UC website - on the official RAPP website.

Bearcatastic Weekend!`
We had a busy weekend around these parts! Homecoming and BRIDGES Walk were both Saturday. Friday we participated in the Homecoming 5K and many attended the Good Asian Drivers show (sponsored by Diversity Education, GenderBloc, and the Women's Center, among others).
Rather than post a million photos, I threw them into a Bearcat Spirited video.

adVERtisment or ADverTISEment?
The staff and students of the AACRC and EPS had a brilliant idea this fall. Rather than having a long queue of droning speakers give dull too-long plugs about their groups, this year's participants in Akwaaba Black Student Welcome will be treated to a loop of commercials throughout the event. Honestly, I think this idea is brilliant! Not only will groups better convey their purpose, but students will get to hear about the groups on their own terms and staff won't have to deal with organizing the announcements and shushing the crowd for them.

"What is RAPP?" Video
This past school year I dabbled around with Windows Movie Maker and started making "videos" (considering they're just pictures and music, I prefer the quotes...) about RAPP to use this summer during recruitment.
The first one I made is below. The text was based off the results of some surveying I was doing in preparation for a rebranding project I later put on the back burner. It's pretty rough, but still - here it is in its original form.
