Get LINKed with RAPP: UC Campus LINK

People have been able to link up with RAPP through our LinkedIn group for several years.  UC students will now have another way to link up with us online.

Student Activities & Leadership Development is launching a new student engagement portal this summer: UC Campus Link

It's building over the summer through Bearcats Bound Orientation and goes large this fall with Welcome Weekend, but certain student leaders and university staff are being early adopters over the summer to help prepare and build the site.  Many RAPPers are among them!

The site is being built for a variety of reasons, improved events calendar, development of a leadership transcript, and improved student organization registration and connections among them.

RAPP's page was among the first set up.  ARJ 2013, RAPP XXIX, and RAPPORT already have private pages set up for participants.  If you're a UC community member with a UC email address, check out the site and join RAPP on it!
This screencap highlights how UC Campus LINK brings together  much of our social media in a convenient location for students.

Bearcats Bound Here We Come!

As mentioned earlier, a key way we promote RAPP to the UC community is by tabling at as many events as we can.  One of the most-attended of these is Student Spotlight during Bearcats Bound Orientation.

Spanning nearly two months, over 4,000 new students and thousands of their supporters will visit this event that connects them all with campus offices, programs, and organizations.

Throughout the summer, a variety of RAPP alumni will staff the table, talking with new students and sharing information about RAPP.  While this event doesn't usually directly result in many applications, it is invaluable for our visibility and for people being familiar with the RAPP name and logo.

We're lucky - and very grateful - that the Orientation office provides this opportunity to us!

Today was set up day and we're set!  As the wise Ms. Sarah Legesse of Orientation says, "If you're early, you're on time."  As you can see, in the picture above, we were among the first groups to set up.

RAPP Table at Orientation's Student Spotlight

Nothing says "It's summer!" like the kick-off of Bearcat Bound new student orientation!

Student Spotlight is an activities/interests fair that's held each time a group goes through the first day of orientation.  RAPP has been lucky enough to table in this fair every year for many years.  It's a great opportunity to promote RAPP to new students, current student leaders who are there representing other groups, and the larger UC community including parents.

We started the summer in style today with an informative table and RAPP/ORT superstar Jojo and program coordinator Rebecca representing us!

Wednesday July 6

The Student Spotlight RAPP table also has buttons and informative postcards for visitors to take.

RAPPer in the Spotlight for SOL Work

I'm a little slow on the uptake on this one! Still, I wanted to cross-promote it here.

RAPP XXV graduate Dy'Mand Montgomery is a Student Orientation Leader (SOL) this summer. SOLs work long hours with incoming new students and their parents throughout two-day orientations all summer long. The process of becoming a SOL is very competitive and takes a lot of dedication to complete. Then they go through extensive training on the University - honestly, I think there are very few people out there who know as much about UC as our SOLs do!

UC News highlighted Dy'Mand in their article UC Upperclassmen Play Key Role in Summer Orientation. (the picture at right is copied from this article).

Student Spotlight Super Fun!

Student Spotlight began yesterday and we've already had fun in our two opportunities to connect with new incoming students.

Jojo - RAPP XXIV and recruitment coordinator - greatly helped redesign our info board into it current more user friendly and more fun format. Here is is showing off the work at the first Student Spotlight.

Above is the RAPP change-purse I mentioned in yesterday's post on my obsession with RAPP crafts. What magic could be in such a (be)dazzling bag?

RAPP BUTTONS! We made a new batch of buttons with the new logo as a give-away for our table.
Brice - of RAPP XXV and also a recruitment coordinator - and Jojo show off our awesome table and their even more awesome ambassador skills at today's Spotlight!

Many thanks also to Eddie of RAPP XXIII for helping out today at Spotlight!

Student Spotlight Starts Soon!

Student Spotlight - the one-hour time where incoming new UC students learn about ways to be involved on campus - starts on Monday!

The time is generally a fun one connecting with other groups on campus and with students who'll be joining us at UC in the fall.

Today we set up our basic display table for the summer. Thanks to our recruitment leaders Brice and Jojo we have an updated design for the board. We also have a fancy new tablecloth to take with us to our many info table events.
The picture's not great b/c it's from my worn-out old camera phone. Missing from the table are a netbook that runs videos of RAPPers in action. Also missing are the awesome RAPPer volunteers who help us connect with the orientation students.

We have a great spot this year! We're the second table on the left - prime real estate if you ask me. I'm very grateful to the Student Orientation Coordinators running Spotlight for giving us the opportunity each year to connect with students!

Another Video

I'm still learning the site through which I'll make videos this year, and here's my first attempt at text+photos:

These videos (well, once we have more than one) will run on a loop at Student Spotlight at Bearcat Bound Orientation. They'll also go up on the YouTube and - once we have access again to updating the UC website - on the official RAPP website.

If you have any ideas or feedback (positive welcome, but constructive extremely encouraged) on the videos, please let me know!

The Summer's Starting out SOLy

Today marked the third and last training session with the 2010 Student Orientation Leaders (SOLs).
This year is the second year RAPP is providing diversity training for the SOLs. In our first session this year we explored crosscultural communication strategies and whether they could be useful and/or practical in the SOL role. In our second session, we explored our perceptions of diversity at UC compared with the annual statistics provided by the Office of Institutional Research on the student body. Today, we explored the Just Community principles, what they mean to us as students, how they relate to our University experience, and the challenges and benefits of promoting Just Community on campus and to students at Orientation.
I greatly enjoy my time with the SOLs, who are an outstanding and engaged group! The Orientation office does an amazing job preparing amazing ambassadors. I look forward to seeing them throughout the summer as they introduce the incoming students to all the opportunities and resources available to them at UC.
