Meet the RAPP XXIX Facilitation Team!

RAPP XXIX comes together for the first time this week to begin its academic year long journey together.  Meet the team that will be working with the group and behind the scenes to shape the experience.  The photos and bios come from training time together pre-RAPP.

Brice Mickey
Hi! My name is Brice and I am an IT major going into my senior year.  I have been involved with RAPP for some time now (since XXV) and I love the program for what it has taught me.  Last year I was a proud facilitator of RAPP XXVIII and I look forward to reprising that role again with XXIX.

Jalisa Holifield
Jalisa is a 4th year Dietetic student from Cincinnati, Ohio.  This will be her third experience with RAPP, having become an alum of RAPP XXVII and ARJ 1, in 2011-12 school year.
When she is not studying for her advanced nutrition courses she enjoys napping, snacking on healthy food, and dancing.

Nathaniel Bell
I was born in Montgomery, Alabama in a year that predates the fall of the Berlin Wall.  My father, who was in the Air Force at the time, was stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, hence that being my birthplace.  We moved when I was three, so I have no memory of Alabama.
From age three to twelve, I lived in Maryland, though we moved often.  At twelve, we moved to Louisville, Kentucky, which I now consider my hometown.  Almost four years ago, I moved to Dayton, Ohio and began college at Sinclair Community College.  Almost two years ago, I transferred to UC, knowing not a soul in Cincinnati.  Now I'm getting ready to go to grad school somewhere else.  I guess what I'm saying is that I'm a nomad.
There's more, but Rebecca is saying "finish up your last sentence now."  So, feel free to ask me whatever.  I'm fairly reticent, though I'm open when asked about most anything.  Also, I'm a pretentious English major who uses words like, "reticent."

Rebecca Lehman
Personality: Likes to laugh, be ambiguous in answering questions, and awkwardly dance at surprising times
Group activities: Diversity Funding Grant review committee (SALD), Turner Scholars Selection Committee, Faculty/Staff Campaign of Proudly Cincinnati, UC Memorial Committee, advisor to Planet Lan IT and Yoga for the Soul, Nat'l Association for Multicultural Education, ACPA
Grew Up: Hamilton! OH
Hobbies: Swimming, playing ukulele, reading, watching TV
Pet Peeve: When people yawn without covering their mouth
Politics: Fighting oppression through individual awareness and collective action

Siva Nagi Reddy Inturi
I am a laid back person.  I take things easily.  I speak my mind and am very open. I assume myself as a good listener.  I have done many activities, like president of the Graduate Student Association (Chemical) for two years and sports groups.
I am from the southern part of India.  I like sports, hanging with friends, walking, and many more.  I am little political and would love to talk about my opinions only if others are interested.

RAPP XXVIII: Recognizing Participation

RAPP XXVIII started out the year strong in terms of attendance.  They got the same message all groups in recent years get:
The RAPP commitment is being present in body and mind at all meetings and retreats.
This commitment is featured heavily in the application, the RAPP interview, the RAPP Orientation, the actual group-created RAPP Agreement, and they get inundated with print and digital copies of the schedule with the above refrain repeated over and over.

I've been tracking member participation since RAPP XXIV and found a disturbing trend - steadily declining attendance across the board.  Many hours were spent by SALD and RAPP staff and leaders sorting through the issue.  It was part of the motivation for returning to one RAPP group and creating Accelerating Racial Justice.

RAPP XXVIII changed the game!  The retention of members over the year held steady and strong: 85% of those who committed to the process completed it.  The participation of members returned to a high level: Members averaged attending 88% of the sessions.

This is no small feat! We've got a group of busy people: they're all students, most work at least one job, most are involved in other organizations, and everyone has a lot of commitments to manage.  On top of that, there are the unexpected events like illness, accidents, family issues, and schedule changes.

Every year a core group shows us that being at everything is possible.  At our banquets and here online, we recognize those who were able to fulfill the commitment they signed up for to "be present in mind and body" in at least the "body" portion.  This year's group was a little bigger than previous.

Student Leaders
Our Peer Leaders are indispensable to the group and the process.  Their commitment blows me away!

They have already completed a full year of RAPP with great attendance and then sign up for another. With that in mind, the commitment they sign on to is to participate in 3/4 of the sessions.  All three of our leaders went above and beyond this year!  Tianshu even had perfect attendance and Farooq missed only one session while he was out-of-town at a professional conference.

Our Student Facilitator is also pivotal.  Facilitating sessions is actually less than half of his role - Brice participates in the recruitment of members, planning the sessions through which we implement the curriculum, participating in assessment and utilizing feedback, administrative tasks, supporting Peer Leaders, and participating in his own training.  Whew!  He did this with perfect attendance, too!

Many thank you to all these phenomenal RAPPers!

Snapshots from the RAPPORT Year-End Celebration

Last week we celebrated the 2012-13 academic year of RAPPORT - a year of learning, growing, leadership, and fun!  Here are some snapshots of the evening.

The more-than-two-dozen participants enjoyed a dinner from Deep India.
While filling our stomachs, we shared fun memories from the many RAPPORT activities throughout the year.  Then we wrote how we'll each apply something we learned from our interactions in RAPP/ORT this year.

Alexis plans to join RAPP XXIX!

Allison has several takeaways: paying attention to context & semantics, looking for opportunities to better the world, and appreciating good friends!

Vicky will always meet people with an open heart and an open mind!
We ended with recognizing each Bearcat who had earned a RAPP Social Justice Peer Educator Certificate - they shared what the process had meant to them and then participants all shared reflections on the positive impact the person had had on them and/or the group process.

Laura receives her RAPP Social Justice Peer Educator Certificate!
Sharing memories generated lots of laughs, some tears, and a celebration of continual learning!
The evening was facilitated and emceed by Jojo!

Save the Date: RAPP Pin Day! April 18th!

For the RAPP 25 Year Reunion in 2011, we ordered RAPP lapel pins to give to all participants. Since then, we've made a tradition of giving these pins to RAPPers as they graduate at their banquet and as small tokens of gratitude to key RAPP supporters.

On Thursday, April 18th we invite you to join us in welcoming the newest class of RAPP alumni into the community on RAPP Pin Day!  RAPP XXVIII will have received theirs the evening before.

Lost your lapel pin?  Stop by the RAPP Office and get a new one!

On RAPP Pin Day, stop by sporting your lapel pin in the RAPP Office (669 Steger) for a gift & photo.

Ko Named ASEE 2012 National Co-Op Student of the Year

From UC News:

Ko Named ASEE 2012 National Co-Op Student of the Year

Benjamin Ko, CEAS biomedical engineering senior, was recently named recipient of the American Society for Engineering Education’s 2012 National Co-Op Student of the Year Award. This award is a national recognition of his outstanding and intensive co-op with AtriCure, Inc.
Date: 12/21/2012

The Cooperative & Experiential Education Division (CEED) of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has named Benjamin Ko, University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) biomedical engineering senior, as the 2012 National Co-Op Student of the Year. Ko was selected by ASEE CEED for his outstanding and intensive biomedical engineering co-op with local employer AtriCure, Inc. spanning over the last three years.

Ko

Ko has done all three of his co-op rotations at AtriCure, Inc., a company that develops, manufactures and sells surgical ablation systems. Through his experience, Ko has been able to apply what he learns in the classroom as a student in the CEAS School of Energy, Environmental, Biological, and Medical Engineering (SEEBME) as well as gaining a valuable skill-set of technical expertise and interpersonal skills through his collaboration with design engineers.

During his first round of co-op work at AtriCure, Ko worked on a product development team making medical devices for cardiac surgery. He stated, “I was really able to see what my contributions were. It is a really important step for a student worker to take some ownership in the projects and see that he or she is making a difference and see that the engineers actually value you as a member of their team.”

By his second co-op rotation, Ko had made such an impression on the company that he was offered to lead the training of the US sales force on AtriCure’s new cryogenic product. “Ben was one of only two engineers who conducted sales training and who participated in the release system validation studies around the US,” said Christopher Park, AtriCure's director of engineering (2004-2012) and Ben’s supervisor. “Ben was able to communicate both the technical design aspect of the medical device and the science behind its functional operation in a manner such that even a non-technical sales person was able to comprehend and take the message forward.”

GLSEN Greater Cincinnati Youth Group Celebrates Its First Year!

From GLSEN Greater Cincinnati:

Youth Group is one year old this month!
It brings us much joy to say that GLSEN Greater Cincinnati Youth Group has been up and running for one year. It's been an exciting and rewarding process to get Youth Group off the ground and this year has been full of success, support, and the creation of a safe space for LGBTQ youth and their allies.
It has been a very special opportunity and privilege to witness the youth we serve grow as individuals, gain confidence, find social networks, and work through difficult life situations together. Throughout the year we've fostered an open and welcoming space for them to call their own. We've offered a wide range of programming ranging from “what does the Bible say about LGBTQ people” to a “transgender coming out panel.” We participated in GLSEN events like prom and walking in the Pride parade.
Over the year the youth have reached out and offered their friendship to new group members embodying true acceptance. It has become evident throughout this year that safe spaces, like Youth Group, for LGBTQ youth and their allies are a vital resource that the Greater Cincinnati area needs. We look forward to the continued success and growth of Youth Group for many years to come!
Anne Delano Steinert and Kyle Holsinger-Johnson
Youth Group Co-Facilitators
Youth Group so far has:
Served almost 100 different youth,
averaged about 15 youth per meeting,
and served youth from more than 20 different schools in the area
Youth Group meets every Sunday at Mt. Auburn Presbyterian, 103 Wm. Howard Taft Road, from 3:00-5:30pm. It's open to all high school age youth.

Recognizing Participation: RAPP XXVIII Stays Strong a Whole Semester!

As the first RAPP group to come together under semesters, RAPP XXVIII had an even larger challenge for attendance in that they had more meetings under the timeline of a semester than a quarter.  Whereas previous groups in recent years had four meetings and one retreat each quarter, this group had six meetings, one retreat, and an orientation in its first semester (they have six meetings, two retreats, and a banquet ahead for spring semester).

With that in mind, there were many chances for "life happens" to make it impossible for a member to make it to a meeting.  Given the time demands The RAPP Commitment makes on already full schedules of students, I think it's important to take time to recognize the folks who were able to uphold it this time around.

Here are the folks currently in RAPP XXVIII who have had perfect attendance all fall semester 2012:

Abbey Falcone
Aditi Naik
Anthony Foster
Bridget Parhman
Gabby Russell
Kahvah Yisrael
Kalilah Montgomery
Leah Baccus
Lindy Zeff
Marq White
Maya Whyte
Monique Walker
Nathaniel Bell
Oge Okoh
Owen Riley
Rebekah Clinger
Sabria Berry
Sarah Seiger
Shawnee Haslon
Thia Jackson

Our Peer Leaders make a lesser time commitment in terms of meetings, but all three have exceeded this commitment (in so many ways beyond the time!).  Many thanks to Farooq Alkhateeb, Kristin Myers-Young, and Tina Lu for their great work!  Our student Facilitator, Brice Mickey, has also well exceeded his expected commitment - countless thanks are due!

Marq, Rachel, Emma, Iman, & Aditi show part of the RAPP XXVIII handsign!

Dedication to Diversity, Communication Brings Recognition to A&S Dean

From UC News:

Dedication to Diversity, Communication Brings Recognition to A&S Dean

The dean of the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences will be honored by the National Communication Association for his exemplary career and service as co-editor of an academic journal.

UC ingot   When it comes to diversity, Ronald L. Jackson II certainly practices what he preaches.

The dean of the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences has identified diversity as a strategic priority in his first year leading the largest college at the University of Cincinnati. And this week he’ll receive a lifetime distinguished service award from the largest communication association in the United States for exhibiting many estimable personal and professional attributes – including commitment to diversity and concern for others – and for advancing the discipline.
Dean Ronald L. Jackson II will be honored with the National Communication Association’s Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award.

Jackson recently was chosen as this year’s recipient of the National Communication Association’s (NCA) Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award. Jackson will receive the award during NCA’s 98th annual convention to be held Nov. 15-18 in Orlando, Fla. The NCA promotes the importance of communication in public and private life and its ability to improve the quality of human life and relationships, and to solve human problems.

The NCA’s Kibler award was created in 1978 to honor Kibler, a professor of communication at Florida State University. The award was designed to recognize qualities epitomized by Kibler, such as dedication to excellence, commitment to the profession, concern for others, vision of what could be, acceptance of diversity and forthrightness.

“It is always great to be recognized by one's peers,” Jackson says. “Having this kind of award shows that the field of communication recognizes there are challenges ahead but that there is important work toward addressing those challenges. The famous civil rights activist Eldridge Cleaver once stated, ‘If you are not a part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem.’ I am proud to be a part of the solution.”

Jackson and Kent Ono of the University of Utah also will be recognized by the NCA for concluding their co-editorship of the NCA's Critical Studies in Media Communication journal. Jackson says his work on the journal helped him further appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of the field of communication and the importance of understanding media in today’s increasingly technology-connected society.

“Clearly, the world in which we live practically inundates us with all kinds of media. This environment continues to grow as a result of the proliferation of handheld devices,” Jackson says. “Therefore, we have to understand the nature of media if we are ever to understand the evolution of society. That is the case in the United States and throughout the entire world.”

Jackson is one of the leading communication and identity scholars in the nation. His research examines how theories of identity relate to intercultural and gender communication, and he is nationally recognized for having developed a model known as the Black Masculine Identity Theory.

This summer, he released a book, “Communicating Marginalized Masculinities,” that was co-edited with Jamie Moshin of Marietta College and published by Routledge. Jackson hopes readers will gain an understanding of how masculinities can at times be marginalized and at other times be privileged.

“I think the presumption is that all men have privilege all the time and everywhere they go,” he says. “There are several factors that contribute to the marginalization of men such as issues related to sexuality, socioeconomic status, race, physicality and family background.”

Jackson also was recently announced as the keynote speaker for the fifth annual University of Cincinnati Diversity Conference on March 27. His topic will be "What It Means and When We All Matter: A Mandate for Diversity Excellence."
