Join UC for Cincinnati Pride on June 30th! - Sign Up Today to be a Parade and/or Festival Volunteer!

From the UC LGBTQ Center:

It’s almost time for Cincinnati Pride! What is Cincinnati Pride you ask? The mission of Cincinnati Pride is to provide the Greater Cincinnati LGBT community and allies a forum celebrating and affirming our individuality and importance to the Greater Cincinnati area by giving expression to our community's rich history and diversity and renewing our dedication to promoting acceptance of all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

They provide information, support local economic growth by partnering with the community to attract individuals to the Greater Cincinnati area, collaborate with other organizations through outreach programs, citizen involvement, and events, and educational resources to those inside and outside of the LGBT community.

This year, the LGBTQ Center, Alliance, Colors of Pride and GenderBloc will not only have a table at Cincinnati Pride representing the University of Cincinnati, but we will also be participating in the Pride Parade which will take place the morning of Saturday, June 30th!

This is where we hope we can get your support. We would love to have a large, strong University of Cincinnati group that will walk with us in the Pride Parade. Below are two links. The first one is a very short survey to see who is available to walk and/or help work the table (greeting folks, passing out information) and the second link is to the Cincinnati Pride website. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Share your availability to walk and/or work the table!

LGBTQ People of Color Sought for Survey on Intersectional Coping

Via Colors of Pride:

INTERSECTIONAL COPING is a study to look at how lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals who identify as racial/ethnic minorities or as people of color deal with multiple forms of oppression and discrimination. The research group, who identify as LGBTQ people of color and allies, is trying to figure out the ways LGBTQ people of color deal or cope with heterosexism/homophobia and racism and how these relate to well-being.

This online survey should take 15-20 minutes. The perspective of each and every person who participates will  be very helpful toward our long-term goals of supporting and promoting well-being for LGBTQ people of color. Individuals may also, after they complete the survey, participate in a lottery and win one of five $75 prizes.

Please participate, if you are interested and:

1) are at least 18 years old,
2) identify as LGBTQ, and
3) identify as a person of color (e.g., African American/Black, Asian/Asian American, South  Asian/Middle-Eastern, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawai’ian/Other Pacific Islander, Latino/Hispanic/Chicana, bi- or multiracial).

(Un)heard: Transmasculine People of Color Speak! - May 3rd!

From Colors of Pride:
(Un)heard: Transmasculine People of Color Speak!
Thursday, May 3, 2012
6:00pm until 8:00pm
AACRC

As part of our Queercat Pride Week celebrations, the University of Cincinnati LGBTQ Center, Colors of Pride, and the United Black Student Association are bringing the audio/visual installation (Un)heard: Transmasculine People of Color to the University. In addition to a gallery display at the beginning of the event, the group will present Building Solidarity: An LGBTQ-Focused Anti-Racism Workshop. The event will take place at the African-American Cultural Resource Center located by Daniels and Dabney on the University of Cincinnati's campus.

ABOUT (UN)HEARD:
(Un)heard is an audio/visual installation about the lives and experiences of transmasculine people of color. By sharing first-person accounts and positive images, this exhibit seeks to challenge damaging myths and stereotypes about transgender people and people of color, and to educate people about a marginalized, and often invisible, group. The project celebrates a range of views, opinions, and experiences that are unique and empowering to trans
gender people everywhere.

The past two decades have seen an increase in conversation about transmasculine experiences and identities. However, the experiences of transmasculine people of color are often misunderstood, ignored, unaddressed, and unheard. To date there is no other mixed media project that focues specifically on the expereinces of transmasculine people of color. By utilizing in-depth audio interviews and intimate portraits, (Un)heard seeks to move transmasculine (transgender, ftm, bois, masculine of center) people of color identities and community from margin to center and addresses issues of personal triumph, loss, desire, community, relationships and discrimination. At the most basic level, (Un)heard combats transphobia and racism by breaking silence and making the invisible visible. By encouraging people of all ages to affirm and appreciate diversity, this traveling exhibit contributes to the process of dismantling the destructive power of prejudice and intolerance, thereby making the world a safer place for all individuals.

RAPP Spotlight: Tyler T, Speaker Extraordinaire

RAPP Spotlight is a column that we briefly had on the RAPP blog that we're now reviving.  What better place to start than with a RAPPer who's done much in the spotlight lately: Tyler Thompson!

Tyler is a graduate of RAPP XXV, a graduate of the inaugural class of the Social Justice League, and is a Peer Leader with RAPP XXVII this year.  He's a third-year student studying neuroscience and psychology.

Tyler is involved in several organizations on campus, including GenderBlocColors of Pride, and Advocates for Youth.  It's his involvement in these that put him in the spotlight on campus and in Greater Cincinnati this past week.

This past Saturday, November 20th, was the annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance.  Tyler helped Cincinnati recognize this in several ways.

On Wednesday, November 17th, Tyler was the closing speaker for the city-wide event - he provided a brief but inspiring reflection on achievements toward and a call to action for continued work on trans* equality.

On Friday, November 19th, Tyler put on a rousing performance during the quarterly GenderBloc Genderf*ck Drag Show, which recognized Transgender Day of Remembrance as well as raised funds for TransOhio and awareness of Ohio issues and legislation around sexual health and education.

Thank you Tyler for all that you do!
