Nikki Taylor, associate professor in the Department of Africana Studies in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, will give a presentation during the Stowe Bicentennial Commemorative Conference. The conference starts Sept. 29 and runs through Oct. 2 and will be held at various locations around Cincinnati. Taylor’s presentation will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Reikert Auditorium.
The story of Margaret Garner reveals that slave women’s resistance was more tied to the destiny of their children than historians have previously acknowledged. When an enslaved Garner, along with her family, fled across the river from Kentucky to Ohio in an audacious attempt at freedom, she was faced with an untenable decision. Cornered and facing capture and re-enslavement, Garner chose to kill her two-year old daughter.
In her presentation, “Driven to Infanticide: Margaret Garner, Fugitive Slave Resistance and Tragedy on the Ohio River,” Taylor will dig deeper into the issues surrounding this tragic act of desperation.
Taylor will join several other participants from the University of Cincinnati speaking about the origins and legacy of Stowe’s novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”
